Sock It To Me

The owners of a 3 year old Great Dane took him to the vet because he was groaning and trying to throw up. After x-rays showed a mass of something in his stomach, the vet decided to operate. The surgery progressed something like a magician pulling hankies out of his pocket as the vet pulled sock after sock out of the dog's stomach. It was 43 in all pictured above. Fortunately the doggie came through just fine. Man, I'd hate to have to foot the bill for that though!

Is Space Travel Covered?

Russia sent 5 geckos, amongst other small creatures, to space in order to study the animals sex habits in zero gravity. The satellite was recently brought back and the geckos were all dead, possibly due to freezing. Ok, first, if you are studying sexual activity why send an odd number of participants. Second, who did not know it is too cold for geckos in space? Yeah, yeah, they knew, but they sure didn't prepare for it sufficiently. Thirdly, were they insured by Geico??

Dinner On The Fly

We have all heard cautionary tales about hawks or large owls picking up small dogs as prey while the dogs are outside. But one would think a pet would be safe in the house AND inside a closed cage, maybe not so much. Last Sunday an owl flew into a tenth floor apartment through the balcony door, opened a bird cage, killed one canary and traumatized the other one inside. The pet owner found the owl still in her home, then it flew back out and nonchalantly perched on her balcony for a photo op. The least it could do after killing her pet!

Mathilda the Bottled Hen

Mathilda, a white leghorn chicken, was pushed into a five-gallon glass jug by her owner, Henry Willis, minutes after she emerged from her shell. She then grew into an adult chicken in the bottle, and became known as Mathilda the Bottled Hen of Denver. This was back in 1936.

Willis said he bottled her as part of an experiment to control her diet, though many scientists said they couldn't see any value in such an experiment. Animal rights activists were outraged and pushed the state bureau of child and animal protection to intervene. But ultimately the state authorities didn't do anything because, according to the DA Earl Wettengil, "this appears to be a scientific investigation which justifies the facts."

So as far as I know, Mathilda remained bottled for her entire life.


Putting hens in bottles must have become a bit of a fad, because I found a picture of a second hen bottled a year after Mathilda.

1) Some monkey took a 'selfie' with a professional photographer's equipment.

2) Wikipedia used the image.

3) The photographer claimed copyright & brought a £10,000 suit.

Where do you stand on this? Who has the rights to the image?

Sick Raccoons=Delayed Flights

JFK International Airport has been having a lot of trouble with turtles on the tarmac since 2009. After extensive study they have figured out what caused such an over abundance of turtles. In 2008 distemper decimated the raccoon population at the wildlife refuge and raccoons prey heavily on turtles. The raccoons are catching up now and the turtle population is more controlled, so maybe flights will not get delayed at least not for THAT reason.
