2012 Myth

In response to a recent discussion on one of the WU threads I found an article on Live Science about the 2012 doomsday myth. Yes, myth. The Mayan calendar does end in 2012, but lets face it, it had to end somewhere. There is no corresponding portent of doom. The Mayans did not predict the end of the world, they just ended the calendar, presumably because it was carried out pretty far ahead and could be continued when it got a little closer to 2012. Unfortunately they won't be needing to extend it any further and, in fact, did not need to extend it as far as they did. Not everyone who believes 2012 is important thinks it will spell doom for mankind. Some believe 2012 will be the year an age of global harmony begins. The article explains some of the reasons for the myth and is quite interesting. I hope you all enjoy it.

What you've bought into, Patty, is "the party line" produced and propagated to keep the masses in line and avoid panic!

The Mayans were really visitors from another planet that had had to stop on this ball of mud to fix their ship. While here they observed something that was going to cause the planet's demise in 2012.

Now, there's a myth for you! 😏

definitely freaky mw. there are historic events that are covered in several different religious or cultural texts so lets hope this end of world stuff won't prove to be one of them. it wouldn't have mattered when the calendar stopped, there would be doomsday predictions about it. that is the nature of man, if there is no understandable or obvious reason for something we will make up our own story. until science started giving us reasons for natural happenings (lightning ect.) people made up myths and stories to explain them. nature abhores a void, and that is true with imformation too. i'm glad you enjoyed the post sweetie!

proximity to a problem often blinds even the most brilliant. no poeple find it easy to change the fundamental way of doing things either. nothing impedes change like the 'we have always done it that way.' attitude.

23 is a mystic number somehow i guess. i googled it and it seems to turn up alot. this interests me because my birthday is 6/23
my dad's was 7/23 and his dad's was 8/23. my niece's is 8/23 also. it hasn't exactly brought me good luck that i can see though.

I'm not a mystic or into all the astrology hocus pocus (no offense to those who are, of course). I don't visit fortune tellers or get my palm read. I don't lock myself in my room when my horoscope says the day is going to suck. And I freely admit that I am weird, which is what drew me to this site in the first place. However, when I was eight years old, I had a dream. I remember it clearly. I was standing on a beach. The sand was a shimmering silver. The sky was a dull golden color. And as I stood there, I heard a voice in my head. It told me several things but the one that stood out was that I was going to die in thirty years, when I turn 38.

I'll be 38 in 2012.
