6 1/2 Magic Hours

What's weird about this film? The fact that once upon a time, air travel was sexy, easy and fun!

I love that in the 1954 establishing shot they accidentally caught a 1957 Dodge passing by, one of the 1957est looking cars ever made. Also, when I flew from London to New York in 2004 it took over seven hours.

But before the jet age there was an even more luxurious form of air travel, the Zeppelin. Sure, they weren't nearly as convenient as jet airliners, but they were literally cruise ships in the sky with individual bedrooms, a dining room, and some even had a ballroom complete with a baby grand piano. And before anyone brings up the Hindenburg, that was the only passenger Zeppelin disaster in history, which could have been avoided if it had been filled with helium instead of hydrogen. Luckily, there are a few companies working on modern Zeppelins, so eventually air travel could be relaxing and fun again.

I liked the line about "no loss of sleep." For it to still be light when landing in London, even in the summer, it can't be much later than 9:30 pm, which means you left New York at 10 am, so unless you spent the previous night at the hotel at the airport, you're going to be missing out on some sleep. Still, for only ten years after D-Day, civilian use of jets for vacation travel is pretty darned amazing!
