I like Family Circus with the transparent 'not me' kid and Jeffy's meandering paths through the neighborhood. Kenny does remind me of your doggie honey, except she is prettier. Can't wait to see her and everybody Friday. Hopefully your son will be out of the hospital by then.

I'll take anybody's work as long as it's funny but I much prefer a solid dose of sarcasm or political jabbing.

I think Shultz was a genius & Larson (Farside) really should be a WUvian idol.

Where to start? Anything by Robert Crumb. The Fabulous Furry Freak Bros. The Far Side. The transgressive work of S. Clay Wilson. Calvin and Hobbes. Cheech Wizard. Everything by B. Kliban. Dirty Duck. Zippy the Pinhead. Doonesbury. Timberland Tales. Bert the Rabbit Boy. Andy Capp. Pogo for the sheer courage of Walt Kelly. Anything by Gahan Wilson or Sam Gross or P.C. Vey or Rick Meyorwitz or John Caldwell or Charles Addams or Sam Gross or Matt Groening or Ralph Steadman (Hunter Thompson's illustrator) or Tom Cheney or Al Jaffee or Charles Rodrigues or unrepentant quadriplegic John Callahan or Ed Subitzky or Edward Gorey. And yes, Peanuts.

Sadly, most of those cartoonists are gone or have stopped cartooning. But I can find a lot of their work in my attic.

There's a fairly new one I love -- I've been following it since it started, and it recently had a restart because it became syndicated:

It's witty and acerbic, and the drawing is often amazing.

Non Sequitur is great, too --

Calvin and Hobbes is the unchallenged king of all comics for me. Bloom County was great. The Far Side and Doonesbury have had periods of greatness. I have to give For better or For Worse a nod for having the best realistic aging and progression of characters in any strip I've ever seen. Walt Kelly's Pogo opened creative doors. Boondocks gets points for unflinching grit. I've started to appreciate Peanuts more over time as I discovered the social commentary hidden within.

Nothing touches the range and eloquence of Bill Watterson's Calvin and Hobbes though. That guy has made me laugh, nearly cry, and at times examine myself. I read them to my son who is 8 years old now and we end up having long discussions about the references and meanings of the strips. Plus, I just love the art. What other cartoonist could incorporate poetry and watercolors so seamlessly?

Not exactly in the same vein, but I have to mention the graphic novels of Tintin and Asterix as well.

'Calvin and Hobbes' is the undisputed best of all time. Googling "C and H cartoon" once led me to 'Cyanide and Happiness' which is great in its own way -- lewd, crass, and brilliant.

Brooke McEldowney does both '9 Chickweed Lane' and 'Pibgorn.' The artwork is often stunning (except that he really, really, really can't do open mouths). Storylines often take weeks and weeks to play out.

'Broom Hilda' is a classic I can't do without. Same with 'B.C.' 'Hagar the Horrible,' 'Wizard of ID,' and 'Ziggy.'

'Smith' is the world of English cats. 'Fred Basset' an English dog. Both very funny and touching.

'SMBC' (Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal) is thought provoking and uncomfortably real at times.

'Rose is Rose' is like Family Circus from an adult perspective. I love it when sweet, innocent, trusting suburban housewife Rose turns into her alter ego Biker Chick (happens far too rarely).

'Last Kiss' is one of my guilty pleasures ("Don't undress me with your eyes. Use your teeth.")

There's really too many to list. I spend half an hour a day at GoComics and Arcamax reading cartoons. Best anti-depressant there is.

Charles "Chaz" Addams has got to be the all time master of the macabre and all that is weird. I nominate him as the patron saint of WU.
