british councils

Britain's local councils out of control
(1) Lambeth Council (south London) will spend £90k to hire "reflexologists" to deal with unruly adolescents, via such treatment as foot massages. (2) And, by the way, Bournemouth Council issued an edict banning the word "via" (and 18 other Latin terms) because they're too "elitist" and might make people feel bad if they didn't understand them. (3) And a East Cambridge District Council jackbooter closed down a tavern's gentle, half-hour poetry-reading session because the pub had only a "music" license, not a "spoken word" license. (2) - I wisk my company would ban the word via cause there's one person who uses it so much that I would like to beat her with a ballpeen hammer. Oh yeah, add as per to that cause she's fond of that little gem too.

MM - I suppose irregardless and ergo are on their list?

(3) - This sounds like the anal sort of thing my town would do. Well if someone complained. Nothing in this town happens without someone complaining. And there are a lot of complainers.

It's nice to know we aren't the only country catering to the dumbest and ridulously easily offended people.

John - I would also add catch phrases like "think outside the box" or "continuous improvement".

How about "actual" as in; "This is an actual picture of my house."?

Jules, it's easier to rule the dumb and uneducated than a people that can have actual thoughts of their own.

warsh: I'm going to get the wife to warsh my pick-um-up truck.

My favorite - vis a vis. Who USES that???

BG - that's only the Boston & Worchester area's that have that accent. The rest of Massachusetts and New England does not. Therefor I'm staying put and continuing to be annoyed.

My boss has several catch phrases he says at least 12 times a day, even more when we're in meetings. In the really boring meetings a friend and I like to place bets on how many times he'll say something and then keep track throughout. Keeps us awake.

Jules - Good game...I'll have to try that one out. BTW, I thought of another movie line..."Surrender Dorothy!!"

I also hate the use of EOM in emails. Like I can't figure out when the email is finished.

"Goonies never say die"
or something like that

Maxx -- one of my company's "corporate goals" is "Continuous Improvement." It's on everything from posters to pens to every powerpoint presentation presented here.

Jules -- I had a prof in law school whose favorite phrase was "and so consequently...." I used to make a tick mark on my notes whenever he said it. I think his record was 68 times in a 50 minute class. Ugh!

Just thought of another one that was drummed out of our heads by Mrs. Best in 9th grade English; "at about 9 o'clock". It was either "at" or "about" can't be both.

Then CNNi types have started spouting, "Guess what!" Why in the @#$@#$ should I be guessing anything when watching a news channel?

Ad nauseam.

BG - get a 6 pack in me and I'm not capable of saying Stop either! 😊

That's good to know Jules. What are you doing after work? Wanna get a drink...or 6? 😜

Wanna fly to CT?

Are they anything like TPS reports?
Posted by Jules in Connecticut on 11/03/08 at 01:14 PM
Yes BG, I do have standards. Only when I'm sober though. 😉

Big Gary - don't tell me you've never seen Office Space?!?!?!?
Posted by Jules in Connecticut on 11/03/08 at 01:39 PM
Office Space is one of those movies (like Super Troopers) that get funnier each time you watch it.
Posted by Jules in Connecticut on 11/03/08 at 07:46 PM
Like "Raising Arizona" or "The Big Lebowski". I've never seen "Super Troopers". Is that the one with the puppets?

They used to generate forests of documentation at one of my old jobs -- we called it CCF: Certified Content Free.
