Burbank Beard

Vern Sion took home the prize in a beard contest judged May 21, 1951. I think he earned it.

This is/was just shameful product placement.

@Todd: Now you're trying to tell me that plaid and checks don't go together? Not even in Burbank?

What does anyone make of the captioning on the photo (at the top)? It makes me think that the letters on the guy's face are actually in reverse, as he would then see them properly when using a mirror to sculpt his hair.

You're right KDP. The text reads "Vern Sion's beard spells 'Burbank'. 5/21/51"

Curiosity got to me. I went to the source and examined the photo in better detail. The print is correct - notice the buttons on his shirt which are correct for a mass produced garment for a male. The archive captioning is mirror reversed. Can't think of why an archivist would do such a thing.

It might have been done to more easily demonstrate the lettering in the beard as the script on the slate-board isn't too legible. Then again, it could have been a mistake in the darkroom. I didn't notice the reversed script until you pointed it out and, most likely, wouldn't have noticed it in the dark room either.
