checkers champion

He played checkers for hours a day and wrote books on strategy
(Note: This is not a story from The Onion.) Richard Fortman passed away earlier this month, leaving a legacy as one of the world's great authorities on checkers (7-volume handbook; six-time Illinois state champ). He was even a two-time world postal checkers champion, which is exactly what it suggests, which is players mailing each successive move to each other by U.S. Mail, so that one game lasts for months. Yes, there are grandmasters and "historical" openings and endgames. New York Times

WOW!! Isn't being a checkers Grand Poo-Bah like being the greatest at playground Hop-scotch? WTF and Who Gives a $h!T. What is a Historical opening in Checkers? "I think He'll use classic old dude from the park opening and move his red checker diagonally to an adjacent black square."

Checkers requires as much skill as chess, backgammon, etc. These strategic board games sharpen the mind. Based on avmayes614's reply, I can only assume his/her preferred pass time is any 'reality' show, or playing 'let's stack the beer cans in the shape of a Christmas tree'.

I have had an ongoing game of chess with a friend on the west coast for approximately 3 months. We decided to do it 'old school'. We each have a board at our homes. We photograph the board after a move, snail mail it to the other person and wait for the mail carrier to deliver a reply.

Everyone who plays a game feels it is worthy of championships, I guess. A lot of people will look down on the non-traditional championships, though. Magic the Gathering seems a bit like a kids' game to me, but the thousands who compete nationally, and maybe internationally would likely disagree. Still, they're nerds, and I think I could take them in a fight.

Somewhere out there, people are playing in a Go Fish! tournament.

I don't know about Go Fish but you can rest assured that somebody's competing in the next Cup Stacking Tournament. 😕
