Citizens Against Lawn Mower Madness

Mike Tidwell of Takoma Park, Maryland founded Citizens Against Lawn Mower Madness (CALMM) in the early 1990s.

He's moved on since then, and is now head of the Chesapeake Climate Action Network.

I think his first group had the better name.

I live in an area where most people hire landscaping companies at great expense to do their yard work. They all seem to use leaf blowers which simply move debris from one place to another. Of course, all their equipment is gasoline powered. I've been using a plug-in electric mower for many years. It's not as quiet as a push mower, but it's quite a bit quieter than gasoline mowers.

with electric equipment, the CALMM agenda could actually work.

Commercial landscapers will stick with gasoline for a while unless required to switch for regulatory reasons - they run their equipment for hours a day, and electric equipment isn't quite up to that challenge yet without significant expenses. For large areas, electric equipment doesn't really exist - if you need to mow a few acres, electric tractors, riding mowers, etc. just doesn't have enough onboard power storage to do it. With a 60" cut zero turn mower, it burned about 3 gallons of fuel to cut 4 acres. At 30% engine efficiency, that's about equivalent to 1,000 lbs of lithium ion batteries - but my mower only weighed about 700 lbs total

Maybe people should switch from The Great American Savannah to creeping plants that don't have to be cut. I already see a lot of those "weeds" in front and back lawns. Some of them have pretty purple flowers in spring. Others, like thyme, smell good.
