Coyotes High on Mushrooms?

Along Highway 1 near Bolinas, CA, there have been numerous reports of coyotes (or maybe just one coyote on multiple occasions?) "staring down automobile drivers as they drive through this twisting, turning section of highway." A driver said, "It's a terrifying, yet beautiful thing to behold."

Why is a coyote staring at motorists? One theory is that the animal ate some hallucinogenic mushrooms, and the cars have become "some sort of coyote vision, a dark vision of human interlopers."

Another, more mundane, theory is that someone fed the coyotes by throwing food from their car, and so the coyotes are now sitting and waiting for more food.

'shrooms are widely used in the Native American Vision Quest (not the wrestling movie). Maybe the coyote was looking for a human (or automotive) spirit guide.

Another valid theory would be that they're sick and tired of seeing their tax dollars going to feed millions of illegal aliens and have decided to block the highway in protest but, because they don't have opposable thumbs, and Siri doesn't speak Coyote, they can't communicate with all the other coyotes in the area to better coordinate their protest.

(Who needs shrooms?)

"Feed me or kill me." Spirit Destiny Animal in your face to inspire life decisions or affirmations.

expat,

Odd that you would say that as 'coyote' is also a term for a human smuggler? Since they profit from illegal aliens the likelihood of them caring about that sort of think is roughly nil (and only slightly less for the canine version).

I remember shrooms. They tasted like pencil erasers so we'd just cut them up and swallow them like pills.
The light tracers were so cool as long as you weren't the one driving.

That coyote in the picture is beautiful! I think I'll go along with the people feeding them from the cars theory.

Coyotes, in my humble option are smarter and more clever then many humans. By distracting drivers they intend on having them crash and kill themselves on a mountain. In my experience, being stared at by a coyote or by some other wild animals can be very unsettling to the inexperienced. This would make a good plot for a Twilight Zone episode...

Eh - a coyote is only a wolf, is only a dog. Just stare back at him.

@Gator Guy~ I would be very 'Unsettled' if I met a 'Gator' eye to eye in the wild! Coyotes ...Nay.
I have met a black bear and her cubs almost eye to eye and the incident went down so weirdly that I didn't have time to get 'Unsettled'.

By the way, the cubs were licking my feet and I think the mother was speaking Norsk?

You just never know what is going to show up when you're dining on shrooms.

found this very interesting. i regularly read wu and was surprised to see this. i live in a suburb of columbus, ohio. about a month ago, i was driving home from work and passed a coyote sitting on the side of the road on a sidewalk at rush-hour. just watching traffic, apparently. super weird. one of those things no one believes and so you start doubting yourself. i like to think that the coyotes are planning something important....

They are planning a hostile takeover!
