Crushing Defeat

A young man in New Zealand has the misfortune of being the first to be punished under a reckless driving law enacted in 2009. It is a three strikes law, on the third time one is convicted of reckless driving of the kind street racers engage in, their car is confiscated and crushed. That's a rough lesson.

Bet he won't do that again, at least not in the same car!

Good for New Zealand! He can hardly claim he didn't know what the penalty was - I'm sure the judge for his second conviction explained it using nice, small words.

The same penalty applies to cars used for smuggling stuff into the UK. Some while back, they crushed a Rolls Royce. It made the front pages, which was partly the point of the exercise, after all.

Don't punish the car, it wasn't the car's fault! 🐍

I agree.... total bureaucratic waste of resources.

Stark County here in Ohio has a Corvette that was confiscated under drug laws. They painted it like a police cruiser and use it at special events. But I also think the whole crushing thing is to keep a higher court from awarding the car back to the miscreant owner.

The reason for crushing cars used for smuggling in the UK was twofold: to get them off the street (agents were seeing the same vehicles come back through with monotonous regularity), and "pour encourager les autres" - to dissuade the like-minded.
