Newspapers and magazines could be a bit unstable. But a stack of coffee table sized books might suitable for sitting on.

Why create a fake chair back? More importantly, why create instructions for accomplishing this? Certainly weird.

That might be the only use for those coffee table books I keep receiving for Christmas from great aunt Whatsherface or Thingie, my cousin's most recent girlfriend.
