egyptian prisoners

It's good to be a British pris—oops, make that Egyptian prisoner
A "senior security official" said an experimental program during Ramadan would continue indefinitely to allow prisoners to order take-out (at their own expense) from local restaurants instead of eating prison food. It's win-win for the prisons because it helps get those irritating human rights people off their backs, since Egyptian prison food is said to be especially poor. Reuters via Yahoo

What happened to prison being a punishment??

But then wont the prisoners sue the system for making them fat? Oh wait, that's only in this country.

KW-It is still punishment. They do have to pay for it. That might seem strange but it would be nice in this country to make prisoners pay for their own food. I remember reading once that it costs about $60,000 per year to house a prisoner. Making them pay for their own food could reduce that some.

What I wonder about are the security measures for getting this food to the prisoners.

Madd Maxx - Although you make a good point, what about all the other superfluous expenditures made on these prisoners?? Explain to me why they need TV (much less cable/satellite TV)? Why should they get FREE community college courses? I could go on and on here. THere are plenty of places to cut back.

KW - I agree with you on all the other cutbacks that could be made. After all, it is suppose to be prison.

I remember reading a story in a Life or Time magazine, several years ago, about a man in a Turkish prison who had to supply his own food. He would have family send him crackers and oil. He would then collect roaches into a cup, add a little oil, then smash them into a spread and...well you know. Now that's prison.

Madd Maxx: "It is still punishment. They do have to pay for it." Last I checked us free "law abiding" (kind of) citizens have to pay for our own fast food too. It doesn't seem like punishement to me if it's no different for them than it is for us.

Agreed Jules. All I am saying is that it is a way to cut costs for inmates. Why should they get free meals? I don't get that and I am a law-abiding (at least I haven't been caught) citizen. Think of all the cost that go with feeding inmates; cafeteria staff, paying for foods, water to clean dishes, etc...

Maybe to make it a little harder on them we can say no to making their meals orders super-sized.

avmayes614 - you make a good point, but if this "rehabilitation" is working so well, then why is the recidivism rate so high? I say you and me just need to overhaul the entire system. Yup. It'll be the avmayes614/KW ticket and people can start photoshopping my face onto bikini-clad bodies!

Ew! Yes, I've read much about Turkish prisons. On the other hand, if that guy had gotten his family to bring him olive oil, he could have self-managed his food AND exorcixe! (sorry)
