Ha, an article on the same page says Alexander Graham Bell wont have a phone near him.

I love they way it's worded to sound as though the guy was merely play-acting, and not actually comatose. Although, if I thought it would let me escape the noose, I'd give it a go!

He stuffed a "piece of brassiere, a foot square" down the throat of one of the victims.

Elsewhere on the same page is a story about a girl who attempted suicide by swallowing a dime, three nickels, and two pennies. Much to her surprise, it didn't work. See, they had weird news even in the 1920's.

More of such justice wouldn't be out of place today.
This crap about "capital punishment doesn't deter crime" is pure bull.

Two things come to mind: Judge Roy Bean as played by Paul Newman and the horse / rider hanging scene from "Blazing Saddles."

@Expat47 I've noticed that crime rates drop to zero among criminals that have been executed.

And the expense of housing them decreases too.

Did a little searching on Harvey W Church, and was surprised to find that there are several Chicago Tribune photographs listed as "CT Harvey W. Church Murderer" on ebay at the moment. They seem to show the stolen car, the locations where the car salesmen's bodies were found as well as officers and officials with Harvey himself. (Oh, and no one seems particularly comatose in any of the photos besides an old man in a chair with a shawl.)

Sorry, but all this does is remind me of the joke:

As the overweight comedian grabbed the microphone, the floorboards gave way and he began to plummet to the basement. He told the audience, "Don't worry, it's just a stage I'm going through."

Would never happen now. Now they put death row inmates on suicide watch and if one was in a persistent vegetative state you better believe the state would be paying for their care for the rest of their natural life. In fact I'd bet that they wouldn't even be made a DNR.
