Flowers of Darkness

This scare-documentary certainly starts out by making a good case for drugs as an antidote to the horrors of life, even showing an image of Buddha as celebrity endorsement.

Well reasoned, not preachy in the vein of "Reefer Madness". I liked this one. Also, wasn't the voice of the narrator familiar?

Starts out good, but devolves into anti-drug propaganda pretty quickly. The fact is, drugs have been used throughout history much as alcohol has, with a small percentage getting in trouble with it, but the vast majority using, as we say today, "responsibly". Note the adjectives chosen for the narration. And, just as alcohol prohibition caused the switch from beer and wine to hard liquor, (often adulterated), drug prohibition caused the switch from opium to heroin, which likewise is often adulterated. When we see the end of drug prohibition, we'll see people revert to milder forms of drugs - opium and coca leaves, versus heroin and cocaine - much as we saw after alcohol prohibition.

I liked Nancy Reagan's Just Say No! campaign, mostly because that was it, no long winded reasons and explanations to listen to.
