Highway Distraction
Four delightful sculptures adorn the South 24th Street Bridge in Council Bluffs, Iowa. So striking is the artwork that atleast one resident claims the distraction caused him to hit another vehicle. Another resident charmingly refered to the scultures as looking like Freddy Krueger's hands coming down to grab somebody. Some people just don't appriciate art.

i kinda like it, for exactly the reason given by the person interviewed. it does look like freddy reaching (up) around the bridge.

Must'a been a really slow news day! I've searched for a better picture of this sculpture on the net and even went to Google Earth. Nothing, nada, zip, ziltch. Is this a scam?

Art for art's sake is, well, art for art's sake, and the grant money, of course. I don't care - they're freakin' ugly. For a driving distracttion I would prefer the (almost) naked coffee barristas any day.

Somebody should have shown the city council pictures of artwork on highway bridges in France - they went to some lengths to provide enough distraction to calm bored kids and awaken zoned-out drivers, without scaring the stew out of them.
Expat, you're right. It may be art, but it's definitely fugly. Most places, this would be the "the hurricane was bad - please send aid" photos, not the "see how well we spent your tax dollars" photos.
And while patty may be cute when she's angry, she's a lot cuter when she's angry at someone else! It's safer, too! :shut:
