Holland Girl ISO American Boy

1959: A Holland girl sent a letter to North South Dakota addressed "To a Nice Boy" seeking someone with whom she could correspond.

You can sense in her letter the kind of suspicions about identity that have become so familiar in the Internet age — that you often don't know people's true identity online. You just know who they're claiming to be. But of course, how do we know that "Holland girl" was really a girl?

"Dear Boy" ? and send it to a post office?
Oh well, at least she spells 'correspond' correctly.

Sounds like a school project that was misunderstood or.... well.... we KNOW about those Dutch girls! We've watched one beaming a big smile at us while she marched around with her magic wand all atwinkle.

You got SOUTH Dakota and NORTH Dakota confused in the lead-in, 'A Holland girl sent a letter to North Dakota addressed "To a Nice Boy" seeking someone with whom she could correspond.' And then in the clipping it shows her letter addressed to Sioux Falls, South Dakota. We aren't one and the same.

Hey, thanks! I know this happens quite often across the media, confusing states and names. Our other big mix up is that the media will mix up Sioux City, Iowa and Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Mixing up the proper state with the proper name. And we will have our feigned indignation over the "mistake." But it happens.

Be aware, though, of a group that will really get upset if you mix identifiers up, veterans. The one that will really get to them is calling someone who served in the USAF a soldier. Ouch. USAF = Airman, USMC = Marine, US Army = Soldier, US Navy = Sailor. One story I can tell on myself as an instructor in the USAF, one morning I walked into a classroom filled with Marines and I said "good morning men." And they corrected me and said "excuse me but we are Marines."

Have a great day and keep up the outstanding work. You are a daily morning stop with my morning coffee.

Blue RAH!
