How to Go Places

Once upon a simpler time, Americans needed lessons in how to leave the house.

I was dozing quite nicely til I hit the part where the narrator says "thanks to three small boys with a hidden talent for burglary" That was unexpected

One year on the family trip to Flo-ridda Pop built a wooden platform over "the hump" so my brother or I could sleep on the floor.

Economics at 25cents a gallon???

The safest car I ever road in was a 1950's era Buick Roadmaster station wagon. My dad owned one when I was little. That thing was a freakin' tank. Some of us remember bench seats and metal dashboards. Patty, Nethie, Expat47 ?? (Although Patty probably remembers the most back bench seats 💋 )

His next car was a Buick Electra 225.

I remember standing up in the backseat of a blue Chevy that was bigger than our house... let me see if I can find a picture of it. Aha, well, it's not blue, but you get the point. My mom drove this, with me and my brother always in the back (but never in a seatbelt), while my dad cruised around in a Mustang. Oh how he regrets selling that Mustang.

ever seen a 1976 oldsmobile delta 88? if you slide the seat back from the stearing wheel all kinds of stuff can be done on the front bench seat. :wow:

love that car nethie!

@Patty: The Nash Rambler's seats folded all the way back! Think triple-feature at the drive in!

All this talk of real cars is making me depressed. Oh well, I'll be back home in a week and I'll be able to drive my 1984 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight again...

Nice thought Expat47 but I think unlike some of us patty has never had a double or triple feature even at a drive in .. hehehe :red:

I've been spoiled by my car. Apparently luxury cars used to be luxurious, and the steering is one of the things no new car can match. Its almost like steering a boat, with almost no effort required. Of course, even if modern cars offered power steering like the land yachts had, all new cars have extremely thick padded steering wheels for some reason. Unfortunately, getting the Oldsmobile as my first car means I can never get a new car. The only one that comes close is the Mercury Grand Marquis (which, while nice and roomy doesn't have the same comfort and luxury levels due to modern safety standards), and even it may not last past the 2012 model year. My only choice when it comes time to get another car will be to go backwards, which of course, I don't mind at all. I really like the mid 1970s full size cars like the 1976 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight and Buick Electra, because they are the last of the "true" full size GM cars (even larger than mine) but have some of the clean 1980s styling cues, like square headlights. Go back even further and the prices start to approach a new car, but in return you get some of the best car designs ever, like the 1958 DeSoto and 1960 Lincoln.

As you can see, I've given this subject a lot of thought...

i like the larger slimmer steering wheels too. i had a 1976 delta 88,slightly smaller than the 98, but still a land yaht. she'd giddy up and go too! i had to watch because i'd be cruising along and look down and i'm doing 75-80mph without even realizing it. you've got alot of car to protect you in an accident too. the only draw back is the gas money, ouch. enjoy your baby sam. 😊
