Human falling into lava lake: a scientific experiment

Some researchers wanted to know what would happen if a person fell into the lava lake of the Erta Ale volcano in Ethiopia. Would the force of the impact be enough to break through the thick crust, or would the person simply lie on top of the crust and get toasted?

To answer this important question, the researchers used a 30kg bag of trash as a stand-in for a human and threw it into the lava, from a height of 80 meters. Watch the video to see what happened. If they're true mad scientists, they'll find a way to repeat the test with a human body.

Rediculous post. They weren´t conducting an experiment, they were just disposing of camp trash.

They seemed awfully interested in their "trash disposal", Arlo.

And, just because there was no massive government financing doesn't mean it wasn't good, useful science.

This is just the kind of testing that appeals to me - test to destruction. I just love to see things fly apart under stress.

No, Mr Bond. I expect you to die!

That does look like an awfully good way to dispose of a body. Note to self: if you need to go on a killing spree, do it in Hawaii. Or in Sicily.

Volcano goddess does not like her lake being used for trash disposal...

Gollum broke the surface. What more expirimenting do we need?
Also, volcanoes always require VIRGINS, not trash, to be appeased. So, no Kardashians.

Call Mythbusters. They've probably got a spare dead pig lying around. That's what they used as a human stand-in when they were testing impact differentials for someone falling out of a helicopter.

Pretty scary looking experiment. Would something large enough have the potential to cause a disturbance that could lead to an eruption? It appeared to have that possibility.

+100 internets to El Conquistador, even though that reminder is disappointing.

Frank, call any number of Somali warlords from next door, they've probably got a spare dead opponent laying around. Or an extra live hostage or two.

Patty, that trash bag only weighed 30 kilos, or about 66 pounds, so an adult human would make a bigger splash. Plus the fat and water in a human would probably cause a bigger eruption as the water flash boils and the fat burns quickly.

TCS -- why do I suspect that you're enjoying thinking about this just a wee bit?

Got anybody special in mind for the experiment Scot?

Didn't someone mention the Kardashians? Snooky?

Oh, I thought maybe he had a couple of ex-wives to get rid of.

I'd rather think the "X" in ex-es would mean they've already been "taken care of".
