The Ideal Gift

Modern readers inevitably sense a note of sarcasm in the woman's words, which I'm sure wasn't the intent of the ad men who created this.

But I've gotta confess that I once gave my wife a set of canning equipment for her birthday. In my own defense, it was top of her wish list.

Mine didn't appreciate the new vacuum sweeper I gave her some decades ago. Since then I've just decided she's too high maintenance and impossible to please so I don't get her anything.

In recognition of our ever growing international gang I offer this translation from colonial English to the Queen's English: vacuum sweeper = hoover

My dad once gave my mom a vacuum cleaner for her birthday. She was irate. "Your idea of a birthday present is something to do housework with?!" she shrieked.

I once gave my wife a new expensive set of golf clubs .. Just kidding .. I actually gave her a $200 bowling ball that for some reason had my initials engraved on it.

My mum did a lot of canning of vegetables and fruits for our family. We lived in a semi-rural area - when she found produce, such as apples or corn or peas, at a good price she would purchase large quantities and preserve them for future use. I don't think she would have looked at canning as housework. It was more a matter of providing for the family.

Believe me, there is nothing better than preserved corn, crunchy and sweet, in the middle of winter rather than that tinned stuff from the grocer's.

For those interested in seeing more print ads of the past, it is possible to read old Life magazine issues at http://books.google.com/books/magazines/language/en?sa=N&start=70
Just click on Life and then click on browse all issues. You can select almost any issue and read through it page by page. They are fascinating relics of the past, not only the ads, but also the articles. Many other magazines are available, such as Popular Science and Popular Mechanics, which have some pretty interesting ads of their own.

The key is that it is OK to give household equipment if that is what she requested. If not just take your beating and do better next time.

Update to a top-of-the-line All American canner and put it under my tree. You'll get the requisite hug and plenty of home-canned salsa, Red Rooster-style sambal paste, and other goodies.
