"...blank checks made out by post office patrons to the order of other post office patrons." ?? Do people give money away there?

'bank' not 'blank'

I'd guess she was taking payments sent to utility companies. That could have made a very fine mess for everyone.

To put her potential punishment into perspective: "Medieval boys are expected to work from the age of seven and can be hanged for theft at the same age." -- 'The Time Traveller's Guide to Medieval England: A Handbook for Visitors to the Fourteenth Century' by Ian Mortimer (2008 / Bodley Head)

For further perspective: "Lions can hunt and kill their own food by the time they're three months old. My three-year-old couldn't find her lunchbox, and it was in her other hand." -- James Breakwell (okay, this doesn't really apply all that much, but I've been waiting forever to share the meme)

Well, it's their fault, Phideaux. They should have just written "checks made out," and saved me the misread.
