Lamp Cord Lighter

File this under Useless Inventions. From Popular Science, Feb 1929:

Novel Lamp Cord Holds Cigarette Lighter
An electric lamp cord suspending a heating element from which the smoker can light his cigar or cigarette is the latest novelty for the living room. The lighter comes in a variety of colors to match the twisted silk-covered wire cord and so has the appearance of a tassel at the end of the cord. Pressing a button turns on the electric current for the heating element. Another switch, located higher on the cord, governs the lighting of the lamp. The device is installed by simply unscrewing the electric light bulb, screwing in a special socket, and replacing the bulb.

Actually, I don't think it would be that hard to make something like this. I'm pretty sure you can buy all the parts off-the-shelf (heating element, cord, etc.). Maybe I'll go into business selling these on eBay.

That certainly doesn't sound like a fire trap.

I agree with you both!

Maxx, you're right! This @#$#$ over smoking and smoke is just a guise, IMHO, for the gov. to create tax revenue and for lawyers to earn big $$$ suing tobacco. If it's REALLY the 5th horseman then shut down the industry and forgo all the tax revenue!

I used to smoke. Up to 4 packs a day during some periods but I finally kicked it about a year ago. I'm still for smoker's rights!

4 packs a day? Holy smoke Expat! How did you get anything done? I was up to 2 packs a day. I quit about 6 months ago.

Why not buy one of these for your lamp on the nightstand, for a refreshing pre-bedtime smoke? Just don't expect your house insurance to pay up if something bad happens.

I too am a former smoker, I quit 5 years ago after 19 years of smoking, but I still believe that the government has no right to restrict privately owned businesses from allowing smokers. My city tried to pass a smoking ban in all restaurants and bars, but we voted that down. Still though, this little device just screams burning drapes. Imagine what will happen when little billy finds the switch on the cord and decides to touch the pretty glowing red thingie...

I'm a non-smoker, but not the militant variety, and I kind of like the fact that my entire province has banned public smoking. Private smoking, of course, is the smoker's choice, and if I'm visiting someone who smokes, or getting a ride from someone who smokes, I will not ask them to stop. If you guys come over to my house to smoke, though, I'll just show you to the balcony.

The way I see it, if a smoker respects my preferences, I'll respect his/her/its choice, too.
