Rock vs. hard place: should the school have prevented a gay boy from expressing himself?
High school student Lawrence King was murdered, allegedly by a classmate angry because King was openly gay, sometimes cross-dressing in school. Now King's estranged parents have sued the school district for wrongful death, for not enforcing its dress code to keep King from looking like a sissy. Los Angeles Times

He didn't even live with his parents, he was a ward of the state. He lived in a home for abused and troubled children! How could they possibly think they are due any compensation?

I'm just going to ignore the idiocy in the above post.

If Lawrence had been female - an annoying girl with a crush - do you think Brandon would have reacted the same way? Would you still be sympathetic towards him if he had?

Tragedy as a political football: humanity's greatest achievement. Regardless of what particular unsupportable tenets you hold, it might be a good thing to use this to reevaluate your view of our society. What does it say about us that we have children being:
a. exposed to such pervasive sexualization that they are making decisions as to sexual orientation immediately after the onset of puberty. I'm assuming that this began before age 15, when King was killed. But even 14 or 15 is pushing the envelope on responsible sexual decisions. There are people in their 40s that can't handle the matter. See the other output of our esteemed newsrangers.
b. encouraged or discouraged by "responsible" adults in making such important life-decision on such little experience and with, by definition, immature faculties.
c. then left on their own to deal with it.
Two lives ruined because the very adults charged with caring for them were unable, unwilling, or just plain uninterested.
