My Mother The Car

The 1965 sitcom My Mother the Car ran for a single season on NBC. Its oddball premise involved "a man whose deceased mother is reincarnated as an antique car, and she communicates with him through the car radio."

Wikipedia notes, "Critics and adult viewers generally disliked the show, often savagely. In 2002, TV Guide proclaimed it to be the second-worst of all time, behind The Jerry Springer Show."

That's why I didn't like "Knight Rider" - it didn't have Ann Southern's sultry voice, just another pretty face.

What anyone would not give for that car today...

A horse is a horse, of course, of course,
And this one'll talk 'til his voice is hoarse.
You never heard of a talking horse?

A "colt classic" for sure.

I remember that show! I didn't particularly like it, but it was better than what was on opposite it.

The only cars in a tv series that ever did anything for me was Arabella, a 1930 Ford Model A, driven by Juliet Mills, and some of Mrs. Peel's wheels.

All these relentless put-downs, of a show that hardly anyone's seen in more than half-a-century.
I won't say that it was a masterpiece of TV, but I recall it, and it had a certain charm---and a truly fun, bouncy opening credits theme- (a fine example of that musical genre)!
Before rendering an easy condemnation of things---like this show---it's worth actually taking a good look at some episodes. In the context of TV in those times: it's not so bad, and has some real merits.
By-the-way: One of the good things, which came up later in the series, was the appearance of Avery Schreiber as a recurrent villain.

"She's a 1928 Porter,
That's my mother dear.
She helps me through everything I do
And I'm so glad she's near.
My Mother, The Car,
My Mother, The Car!"

The theme song was better than they say. The chorus is etched in my brain forever; our family watched the show every week, along with Jeannie, Eva, and Max & 99. I doubt the plots made much sense to us, being so finely nuanced (heh), but the car was really cool.

What do you have against The Jerry Springer Show, TV Guide? Like My Mother The Car, it's not so bad, and has real merits.
