I thought it was a hat, which wasn't completely wrong because I've seen field workers wear a cap made of twists so it'd be handy when they wanted some.

The closest thing I've seen would have been a black tobacco cigar the Vietnamese immigrants favored when they first came to California. A few puffs on one of those would make a round eye go searching for the toilet.
