I suppose this came true, if you can say your phone and tablet use something vaguely similar to Opti-onics!

This looks like a pipe dream for the times in the middle of WW2. Remember it's a WEAPON today but tomorrow it will be a TIME SINK!

The first dipping-the-toe into possible applications based on the theory of optical computers?

Don't hold me to it, and I'm reasonably certain I never saw the term opti-onics before, but it seems to me it's probably tied to a WWII project for optically-guided bombs. One lens, a diffusion grating, a prism(?), and a couple of photocells could pick out a ship at sea. Could have had a lot of potential and generated some very interesting side developments, but alas, radar was on the verge of doing the same thing far more reliably and against a wider range of targets.
