I hate it when people waste food, especially for silly things like this. Just think of how many people could have been fed with all those vegetables. What is the point? I was raised by parents who were young adults in the Depression, and my father grew up terrible poor before that and told me that as a kid, he never went to bed not feeling hungry. Maybe that's why this bothers me so much. I think it's just wasteful, not clever. Same thing with food fight scenes in movies. Stupid.

I hear you, ScoutC, and understand where you're coming from but that old argument just doesn't wash with me. First of all that little bit of food wouldn't even dint the problem and then, if it hadn't been used in this way it wasn't destined for the hungry anyhow. When presented with your argument I usually refer to the overpopulation problem.

It is a waste, but I doubt it would have been donated to shelters otherwise either. The kind of frivolous thinking that goes into that silly display is not the kind of thinking that worries about others overmuch I fear.

Food banks around here won't take fresh fruits or veggies -- needs prompt distribution, makes a mess, and then there's the possibility of tampering . . .

I don't know about this "artist," but I do know someone similar who will buy fruit and go around town posing it in odd places. (Kumquats are her favorite subject because of the word-play in captions.) When she's done, the wildlife in the park gets a treat.

In any case, there's far too much zucchini in the world , and reducing the supply is a public service.

You are entitled to your opinion, ExPat, but likewise your argument doesn't wash with me. We donate baskets of this or that extra from the garden to a local food pantry when we have it. (It is accepted where we are, Phideaux.) No, it doesn't solve the overall problem but it does fill up the bellies of a family or two for a meal or two. Enough people doing it makes a dent. The attitude of "it has to solve the entire problem in one fell swoop or else it is entirely without merit" helps no one and makes for a comfortable and easy out not to do anything, and then to gripe about things not getting done.

Doesn't anyone have a comment on the meaning of the display? Just the fact it was made with excess produce? Weird.

@Phideaux: Battered and fried zucchini with TZATZIKI is to die for. Any other way is, as you say, not worth eating.

oh, the display, it is stupid and the guy should be ticketed for littering the sidewalk.
