Slow Taxi

Need to get somewhere slow? The Turtle Taxi service, currently operating in Yokohama, promises to drive as slowly as possible. They'll even turn off the engine at red lights. The service is said to be popular with pregnant women, the elderly, and parents with sleeping children. [psfk.com]

My 2014 Volvo does that, turns off the engine at red lights. Supposed to save gas, the environment, something like that.

Black turtles???

@FUD: Does it really save gas or is it just a gimmick? My scooter has an ECO button but all it does is slow down the responsiveness of my engine and NOTHING to the gas milage. (kilometerage?)

We don't recycle (a second garbage container is cheaper), have 6 cylinder AWD sedans that get MAYBE 20mpg, don't have low flow toilets or shower heads, etc etc. I drive at least 20 over the speed limit usually. F the environment .. it's all BS anyway. Next time at the store I will ask for double plastic bags like we do on the meat.

I would NEVER ride in one of those. I tend to have a lead foot.

@BD - My brother bought new a 1969 Chev Impala SS, of which only about 2,500 were built. It had a 427 V8 and something like 425 brake HP and a standard transmission with Posi-Traction. He could smoke The Judge and Super Bees (and a couple of times; the police).

But at lawful highway speed, it got 27 miles per gallon.

I assume the pregnant women who enjoy this service are not in labor and trying to get to the hospital.

ATTN: Alex or Paul - I am also not getting the captcha word for submitting a comment. For my above comment I clicked 'Preview' 3 times before I got a 'word'. This is my second attempt to bring it to your attention and it took about 10 reloads to get a 'word'.

This time it took 3 reloads. I get similar results on my Windows 8 and Ubantu Linex computers? 😡

@BMN: Yup, I get the same strange captcha problem if I try to submit a comment while logged out. Thanks for giving us a heads up about it.

Unfortunately there isn't an easy solution. To fix it I'll probably need to do the long, long delayed upgrade of the blogging software we use. It's been long delayed because the upgrade process is a real pain in the ass. I'll let everyone know when I'm going to do it, because it'll take the site offline for about a day. Maybe more. And I need to find a day in the near future when I can work on it exclusively.
