I worked for a few years at McClellan AFB near Sacramento when I was at university. The base was a repair depot, essentially the heavy industry arm of the Air Force - if any plane in inventory needed a part, they could make it from scratch if required.

At one corner of the base was a fire test range where the Vulcan cannons that were carried by the A10 Thunderbolt (Warthog) were given a shake down after servicing / repair. The sound of one was like ripping paper and incredibly loud. We could hear them over the two mile distance inside our office building. The recording at about the four minute mark was typical. I always thought of it as the sound of freedom.
