Supergeared Bicycle

Are supergeared bicycles that will ride at super fast speeds an actual thing? Or did this guy just build a complicated derailleur system?

I see it as just more places to get your pant leg caught, thereby sending you over the handlebars onto the pavement.

I vote for it being a complicated derailleur system. He may have been able to roll at high speeds with a minimum of effort, but there had to be lower gears to get the thing up to those speeds without busting a kneecap. That is, unless he was towed to begin with, but that would be cheating.
