Cigarettes or bullets you're just as dead. I'm not sure but I think my 92yo great-grandpa said something like this as he stubbed out his cigar.

I wonder what the origin is of the word "fag" in this context. Could it be short for faggot, i.e. bundle of sticks?

Pretty much, RobK. I've usually come across it in British literature in reference to a cigarette, sometimes in older American literature but not so often.
