Mermaids are depicted as beautiful and the male equivalent is demonic, wonder why its that way.

The mermaid's beauty is also often quite demonic... think of the Sirens, for example.
As for the beauty difference, I suppose that's because most sailors (and in the olden days, almost all of them) are men, and they're often away from home for a long time.
