Toxic Seaweed

A number of beaches in northern France are not safe for use due to the presence of toxic seaweed. Nitrates have contaminated the water and the seaweed. When the seaweed is washed up on the beach it rots, as it rots it produces hydrogen sulfide. When the crust that forms over the rotting seaweed is disturbed the gas, which is as poisonous as cyanide, is released. A worker paid to clear one beach was overcome and remains in a coma. Another instance involved someone riding a horse, the rider was rendered unconscious and the horse died. I guess life's not just a walk on the beach anymore. http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/World-News/Rotting-Seaweed-Toxic-Fumes-Alert-In-France-Tourists-Told-To-Avoid-Beaches/Article/200908115355431?lpos=World_News_

DFS, I rather assumed H2S asphyxiated you by paralysis of the CNS, hence the sudden loss of consciousness.

df i think i can explain that. the article said there were large piles of seaweed with a crust formed on top. i would guess the top layer dried out, holding the gases of decomp in. when the crust was broken by treding on it or attempting to remove it a burst of very highly comcentrated h2so4 was released. the burst was strong enough to render the person unconcious. once they fall to the ground near the rotting seaweed they are breathing in more of the gas as it escapes the pile, especially since it is heavier than air. does that sound plausible?

that's exactly what i thought pdj! 😊

love i have not found your opinions to be stupid, ever. as for corrupt i don't see where that applies at all. my understanding of any kind of decomposition is that gasses build up if contained(as in inside a body) therefore if a hard crust formed on the seaweed the gases produced in it's decomp (h2s being one) build up pressure as they continue to be produced. when the crust is broken the pressurized gases burst forth and then settle back down(heavier than air). But standing right where the crust is broken at that moment you could get a pretty good lung full of a higher concentration of h2s. it always comes down to parts per million, but it will dissipate quickly as the built up gas is released and dispersed. like standing next to someone smoking a cigarette outside. it smells stronger when they take a puff but it is quickly dispelled. yes i know smoke rises and h2s sinks, but both spread out deminishing in parts per million the more it mixes with the air. that is the way i understand it anyway. but i do bow to your expertease in all things scientific, as always df.
