Up In Smoke

Natalie Shoemark's best laid plans for retirement went up in smoke when her parents' home burned recently. She had collected Barbie dolls since she was a child, 1500 of them, all stored in her parents' attic. The dolls, estimated to be worth $6196 (4000 pounds) were Barbie-Qed.

I am quite sure he parents' losses were a lot higher. I really do not think Barbies have enough value to use for a retirement fund anymore. The market is flooded now. Their value has just melted away.

The math is suspect, it comes to $4.13 a doll?

Told ya they no longer hold their value. Now find one from the 60' in pristine shape and there is some money in that.

Well, that sucks. Stinks, too, I'll warrant. Worse than patty's baaaad pun 😝

BMN, I'm not sure you're right about the math. I just looked it up, and Tesco will sell you a new Barbie starting at £10. The woman, who had been collecting them since she was a child, was only 23, so there can't be any really rare ones in there yet, and a good number of the dolls presumably cost less when they were bought than they would now. She was intending to crack open the vault when she turned 65, at which time, they may well have been worth a few bob. Not enough to retire on, I'm pretty sure, but maybe enough to stretch the pension a little.

Okay P & CS. I've never understood collectors (hoarders).
