Who’s responsible?

Megan Campbell's parked car was hit by a van driven by a city worker, so now she wants the city to pay for the damages. Sounds reasonable. But Campbell was the city worker driving the van that hit her own car. The city is reviewing the incident. [twincities.com]

I'm pretty sure Chuck has posted about similar cases in the past. So perhaps this kind of thing is no longer weird?

Let me see if I can clean up the story with a quote:

Campbell, who graduated from college this year, has shown that the education system will give a degree to just anyone with no innate sense of personal responsibility, morals, or ethics and that government jobs are the only avenue of employment open to such brain dead morons.

There, that's better.

There's a world of difference between 'smart' and 'intelligent'.

I'm not sure whether I'm more surprised by her effrontery or by the fact that the city hasn't already cut a check for her claim.

@KDP: Technically, I suppose you're right, since publicly elected officials hold government jobs.

The whole thing seems fishy. The city will win in the end though because the accident review board has the last word on not just whether or not to pay the claim, But also on whether or not she remains employed!

For the halibut. Why is she not being charged with leaving or failure to report an accident. She is admitting to a crime and needs her criminal record to help her in the law suit.

Hey, I'm not a lawyer. 😏

@Tyrusguy: I'm not so sure. Wanna bet that the city somehow ends up wiping out any possible advantage they have from holding all the cards in lawyers' fees, as she, as a city employee, needs a defense in court?

@BMN: Excellent point. Although since the accident has apparently only just now come to light, the DA now has half of forever to charge her with whatever shoe stands a chance of fitting. What should happen is that they take a long time to determine what charges to file, and then bring one of their larger hammers down, hard.

Egads Mr T.C. Scot: There are no shoes since she has no leg to stand on. 😊

Good point BMN. It could be the damage was already done and she is trying to get the city to pay for her repair. A long long time ago I bumped a car and the guy came out and starting punching me. I drove across the road to a gas station and called the police. He was charged with assault but I was charged with leaving the scene of an accident. Over $1000+ later in court costs I got the charges dismissed. Even if you are proven innocent you still pay .. people don't realize that fact. Also people don't realize that the 10% they pay on bond to get released is not refunded if proven innocent. That's the bondsman's fee to cover the rest if you don't show up for court.
