“Women are soft and gentle, but they hit things”

Makes it sound like they need anger management training.

I know of this problem. The trees over here have been known to jump in front of cars, twice!

This was one of the greatest advertising series in history. The company behind the Volkswagen adverts was Doyle Dane Bernbach. Simple graphics, straight to the point, self-deprecating humor was the rule with constant comparisons to overweight, overpriced Detroit iron.

I can still get any part I need for my 1964 sunroof sedan and 1965 sedan. I couldn't say the same for many Detroit models of the same era.

Auditioning for a spot on Mad Men, KDP?

Except that, if you really loved your wife, you wouldn't want her in a VW Bug if she really did hit something. She would be a lot harder to fix than the car.

My daughter once hit 2 trees, one on each end. Totalled the Durango, but she walked away unscratched. The car was easily replaced. She could never be replaced.

The best idea I had once for my wife was buying her the winning car at the local demolition derby.

Typical German efficiency: don't change something that works. Function over form.

But they did get wild and crazy at times. One of my favorites:
http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2013/03/volkswagen-golf-harlequin-vws-strangest-idea/
(A 1996 model which mix-and-matched colors -- front doors, fenders, rear quarter, back doors, and hood were all different.)

I always wanted a bug. Closest I ever got was a hatchback. I sold it within days because no matter how I tried, the steering wheel wanted to pop off my kneecap each time I got out of it (the only direct-replacement steering wheel two inches small cost almost 25% of what I paid for the car).

Bugs were a lot safer than most people give them credit for.

I'm surprised they didn't advertise how perfect they were for teenagers -- perfect for learning how to drive and easy/cheap repairs for the inevitable accidents.

I drove a bug, once!

Today we're driving around in a Golf. Great car.

Short story: Big sow versus VW....Big sow won.

@Expat : So is the back seat of a Golf good for "foreplay" or at least a good place to "tee off" ???

Waiting to hear from Ty about VWs as he's a VW expert.
I do not hit things with the car!
I was born the same year as that Bug.

@BD: it's a hatchback and the back seats fold down. Not, quite, as good as my girlfriend's Nash back in the day at the drive in but it will do.

@Patty: So we won't talk about the tire/curb thing a while back then. Ahem ...

Ah, The VW,(stands for Virtually Worthless!) Is and always will be one of the best cars ever made! I have been particularly fond of the Transporter,(type 2) AKA The hippie bus. Wish we could post pics in the comments as I have a bunch of old project shots.
Expat, That Golf is one of the best cars made (replaced the bug). The TDI gets about the same fuel econ. as the smartcar? at a lower price, a five Star safety rating and about 3 times the passenger/cargo space.
BD, You NEVER clipped a curb or something ?
Thanks for calling me an expat I mean expert Patty. Your opinion means much to me. 😊

Over here we've got (along with the TDI) the TSI on a 1400cc engine that comes in 122, 160, and 180Hp versions. We've got the 122Hp with the 7 speed serial automatic and she's pulling Gs at 160KpH (100MpH). I can't believe the torque this engine produces! I'm getting an average of 30MpG with the vast majority of the driving in town on short hops to the store.

I think I'd've opted for the TDI if they'd've been available when we bought this one.
