You can Tell By The Smell
A UK Crimestoppers group is handing out scratch and sniff cards to familiarize the public with the smell of pot. This is in the hope that it will help people detect when neighbors are growing marijuana so they can report this serious, dangerous crime.

No, Patty, this is just about the last vestige of crime in the UK. They've whipped their population into such confined and paranoid little boxes that the general population fear even peeking outside that box.

Expat47 is clearly not speaking from a position of experience there. The UK has got some big cannabis cultivation operations going on, largely in domestic houses or empty shops. If only the government would just legalise and tax it, it might help the ailing economy.

I remember a friend sadly watching a news report on police burning a large crop of recreational pharmaceuticals. He said it was the worst case of drug abuse he'd ever seen.

I believe the reason governments won't legalize cultivation and possession is that there is no tax revenue available. I observe a good deal of processing involved with tobacco from the cultivation to the final product and due to it's addictive nature keeps the customers coming back. Hence it is a steady source of sales available for taxation.
But cannabis will grow nearly anywhere and needs a minimum of labor to get the final product. In other words, the ideal Do It Yourself product without a potential revenue stream available for taxation.
Actually, crack ruined the drug culture. Have you ever heard of potheads shooting up a neighborhood like crackheads?

Pot, better known as hemp, could be a cash cow for the economy as hemp fiber is, most likely, one of the most useful of all. Just think what we'd be like if they ever outlawed corn (that maze to you UKers) if smoking the tassel ever caught on.
