My first thought was a truffle...

I thought some mineral also.
However, the weird factor possibilities here are endless... that he's holding it close to his face... that it's used in perfume... that we KNOW it can be used in perfume... that after learning this women will STILL use perfume... etc, etc, etc.

There are people who hunt for this stuff on a regular basis. Yes, it is still used in the perfumery trade - check the perfume counter at one of the fancy Champs Elysees department stores and you'll find it available. IIRC its main use is to prolong the effect of the scents blended in the perfume.
