In grocery stores, fresh produce such as bananas and tomatoes often goes to waste if it's become a "loose single." Shoppers think it's damaged or imperfect.
German researchers have come up with a way to address this problem: make shoppers think the produce is feeling sad because it hasn't been bought.
This is achieved simply by displaying an anthropomorphized picture of sad produce above the singles.
The produce has to be sad. Happy fruits and vegetables don't motivate shoppers.
Also, making produce sad works better than offering a price discount, because shoppers often assume discounted food must be bad.
Recently a box of 40 Sato Nishiki cherries, grown in Yamagata, sold for close to $10,000. More info from SoraNews24.com:
On January 5, at Ota Market’s first wholesale auction of the year in Tokyo, produce wholesaler Funasho Group claimed the winning bid for Yamagata-produced premium Sato Nishiki cherries. 500 grams (1.1 pounds) of the fruit sold for its highest price ever–1.3 million yen (US$9,842), which is 100,000 yen higher than the winning bid last year.
That's $250 per cherry.
SoraNews24 also notes that, when they sampled some Sato Nishiki cherries, "our team of writers had trouble telling them apart from regular supermarket ones."
According to old tradition, if you peel an apple and throw the peel over your left shoulder, it'll form the initial on the ground of your future one true love. But this only works on Halloween.
The Tennessean - Oct 13, 1949
The love divination spell may be aided by reciting either one of the following poems:
By this paring let me discover
The initial letter of my true lover.
Or:
Paring, paring, long and green,
Tell my Fate for Halloween.
A "remedy for obesity" marketed circa 1906. It supposedly was made from the "Rengo fruit". In Nostrums and Quackery (1912) the American Medical Association offered this analysis:
Rengo used to be known as "Rengo Fruit" and the claim was made that its active constituents were derived from a luscious tropical fruit which grows in clusters similar to grapes...
Rengo has been analyzed and, according to Dr. Kebler's analysis, contains: Thyroid gland, Poke root, Cascara, Cassia fistula.
That the prolonged administration of thyroid gland will sometimes bring about a marked reduction in weight is true but its use even under skilled medical supervision is fraught with danger. It is little less than criminal that ignorant quacks of Kellogg's type should be permitted to distribute indiscriminately drugs that have the potency for harm that is possessed by the thyroid preparations.
