Medical Museum

My pal Ed Morris discovered this site: the Medical Museum of the British Columbia Medical Association. I suspect you could spend hours here, looking at archaic tools of the medical trade, such as these contraceptive diaphragm fitting rings.

My doctor still has something like that sitting on his desk, except now it's demo NuvaRings.

I guess I'm the only one lucky enough to get an IUD, ladies?

90MM! That's over 3-1/2". That would be like trying to f#$k a warm bowl of water.

I think the reason NuvaRing works as birth control is because, with such low hormone doses, you're never in the mood to have sex in the first place. My husband won't allow it in the house. I thought about an IUD, but I need the hormones.

(FEMALE TALK ALERT!!!)

The hormones in the NuvaRing didn't affect me like that (not sure anything can diminish my libido) - I didn't like it because I wasn't capable or remembering when I was supposed to remove it, or put the new one in. Out of sight out of mind. I need the little packet of pills staring at my while I brush my teeth every morning.

Expat, I agree with you sir. Glad to have an outtie and not an innie.

That is exactly what my wife tells people about the packet of Gravol anti-nausea tablets she keeps in the medicine chest. She takes them out of the cabinet where they sit while she brushes her teeth and I am preparing the mood music in the bedroom!

Jules, my doc gave me a little timer that I kept in the bathroom. It went off every three weeks to remind me to take it out and then a week later to put another one in. I'm sticking to pills for here on out, though.

My IUD has hormones (it's that mirena). But, like Jules, nothing dampens my libido, so the hormones weren't a big deal to me. But we never know when the mood will strike my hubby, so we have to be ready and we don't want to have to worry about whether I took the pill/changed my ring/we have any condoms/etc. It's always there.

Hmmm I may have to check out Mirena. I'm awful at remembering to take my pill, but I need the hormones for another medical problem. One good thing about the pill, though, is that my husband knows when I hit the sugar pills it's time for him make himself scarce. Personally, I don't think I'm that bad.

I like Mirena. I can't handle high doses of hormones, so this is perfect for me 😊

My doc used a diaphrahm sizing ring to size me for mine...I'm just not a hormones kind of person. He said the most common size is 70mm. After he put it in, I had to practice taking it out and putting it back...so he could check that I wasn't going to be back in a few weeks for a new pre-natal visit. 😉 He didn't have a neato little case for it...it seemed like something that could be disposable.
