What’s The Chances? - 2

Earlier this year we heard of the national lottery that drew the same numbers two weeks running. Now meet the man who has just won a lottery jackpot for the second time!

The unnamed 34 year-old from the Limpopo province of South Africa beat 24 million to one odds to take the country's "PowerBall" draw for 30 million rand ($4 million), just seven years after winning 11 million rand ($1.5 million) from an earlier state lottery system with odds of 14 million to one. His feat is all the more remarkable given he claims to spend only 100 rand ($13) a month on tickets (Telegraph).

That all sounded a bit odd, Kevin.

What about the guy who won with a scratch-off ticket (I think it was a few thousand dollars) and when he reenacted the win for the television crews (in the same gas station) he won a car. This was a long time ago, so I may be off on some of the details.

A quick search of Google reveals that this exact scenario has happened a few times (with multiple million dollar wins from the same person). Also the incident I was referring to happened in Australia in 1999. A man was in a car accident and was clinically dead, but revived, then he won a car from a scratch off ticket. The TV crew liked the inspirational story so they had him buy a ticket and scratch it off in front of the cameras for a news reenactment, which won him a $170,000 jackpot.

"the odds of ANYTHING happening are 50-50"

Except a million-to-one shots. They always happen.
